Father's Day Camping Trip

At the last minute, Jake decided to take all of us to North Fork for an overnight camping trip. We hadn't gone out so far this summer and the end of the summer is going to be busy with packing and moving so we had to hurry and go. The dogs, kids, and Jake were all packed up when I got home from work and we headed over the mountain to North Fork.

We were worried we would never find a spot on such a busy weekend but actually found one of our best spots ever! It was shady and big and flat. The dogs never got to go camping before so they were super excited to be there. They sniffed and sniffed all day.

For dinner we roasted hotdogs and had chips and soda. Then we roasted marshmallows for s'mores. Our tent is a great size for the four of us and I was really happy because Jake and I slept on the separate twin air mattresses and put the kids on the queen air mattress. Out of the family (including the dogs), I got the best night sleep! Jake's c-pap machine battery pack wasn't working, the kids' air mattress went flat, and the dogs whined in the back of the truck anytime there was any noise.

I'm always impressed when Jake can make pancakes, eggs, and bacon on a little camp stove. Delicious. Then we cleaned up and headed home. Camping is a lot of work whether you go for one night or a bunch of nights because of the packing and unpacking but it's always great to be out away from the screens and distractions!

Our backyard view on Christmas morning. We couldn't even see how big and close the mountain is.

Noah built this snowman all by himself.

Grandpa wearing Abbi's new Christmas hat.

Baymax wearing the harness Abbi asked for for Christmas. He hated it. He just rolled around while he had it on.

We played Noah's new card game on Christmas, Oregon Trail.

Kids' Christmas letters and lists.

Dad slaughtering the kids at Monopoly.

Abbi and Noah playing the long, long round of Monopoly.

Joey and Jessica Saari at work at DI.

When the kids thought shoveling was fun.

Joey left alone for the night so I took my treats to bed.

Sammich

Sammich is a little Cocker Spaniel that Jake found on a dark, freezing Sunday night out in the west desert.  He was driving home from the copper mine and saw her dash across the road.  There weren't homes are businesses within miles of where she was.  He coaxed her to the truck with the turkey sandwich he had, hence the name, Sammich.  She was terribly matted and there was even some frost in the mats.  She had no collar, so he brought her home where she could warm up while we looked for her family.  Sammy was very polite when she arrived.  She never barked and she loved Daisy, left the cat alone, loved the children, and REALLY loved Jake.

We posted her on KSL with no response.  The vet checked for a chip and gave her some vaccines to make sure she was healthy and wasn't a risk to Daisy.  And, we had her cleaned up at the vet.  Sammy was very polite every where we went, even when they took out her one claw that had grown out and back in twice over on her back paw.  After spending a couple of weeks with her we'd guess that the vet was a little off when he guessed her age.  She had to be older than three.

No one claimed the pup and because she wasn't real well in the ears and such, we decided we couldn't take her to the pound.  We gave a really good effort in giving her a comfortable home.  And, after a few days, her and Noah were the best of friends.  She still had never barked or caused a problem but had a little potty problem.  Because we decided to keep her, we had her fixed.  While she was asleep they worked on her ears and back claws.  In the vet's opinion, she would never be comfortable and would have pain in her ears forever.  He recommended removing both of her ear drums for the low cost of at least $1700.00.  Jake and I decided to keep her happy and when her tail stopped wagging and her ears were too bad, we'd make her more comfortable (?).  I don't know how to say that without really saying it.

I cried and cried when I saw her after her surgery.  She was 100% deaf from being swollen where they had cleaned her ears.  Sammy was the most pitiful thing I've ever had to see in my own house.  She seemed to be doing well, eating and sleeping comfortably.  A few days into recovery she still had open wounds and had re-opened her incision.

By coincidence, Jake had to go see Quinn at the farm the next morning and we thought a ride might lift Sammy's spirits.  She enjoyed the cone-less, medicated ride.  Upon arrival, a nice farmer met Sammich and fell in love with her.  On a farm, Sammy would be free of crate training and could sniff at her leisure. That farmer just wanted to keep her so much, so Sammich stayed and Jake came home.  Unfortunately, a week later we heard that Sammy hadn't healed from her surgery and passed away peacefully.  We're glad that we got to have her for a little while and give her a warm house and lots of food instead of her being alone in the west deseret.  RIP Sammy.

Roll Over

Devil dog was learning to roll over.  Children wanted to judge her attempts.  You can't see the 10's Abbi wrote on their papers so I filled it in.  We had a wild, good time.

Holy Moly....Lots of Pictures

Abbi, Noah, and I traveled to California for a West Coast get-a-way.  Jake's schedule changed right before we left so we, very sadly, had to leave him home.  My parents joined us for the fun, too.  While we stayed at Aunt Becky and Uncle Steve's, they stayed at a hotel.  The Warrens are excellent hosts and made us feel so comfortable.

After arriving, the Warrens, Missy, my parents, and us went for a birthday dinner together.  Aunt Becky treated us to cake and ice cream at her house.  The Mississippi Mud Cake was SO good!  Friday, we spent the day at Disneyland.  Saturday was beach day.  The children {mostly Abbi} LOVED the ocean.  She loved the waves and got soaked within 30 seconds of arriving.  Noah was a little more nervous about the waves but couldn't keep his hands out of the soft sand.  Sunday, I took the kids for a ferry ride, a walk, and second trip to the Balboa Candy Store.  Then, we had a big family dinner with the birthday dinner people, plus Katy, Andy, and Dustin.  Monday was California Adventure and Disneyland again.  We loved the Long Beach Aquarium on Tuesday.  Most importantly, I loved getting home!

Abbi said she loved everything but really liked California Screamin'.  She didn't really enjoy Tower of Terror.  She spent her money on big girl things so she could buy clothes like Zury and Jessie wear on TV.  But, she did give in and get a panda later.  Abbi was really happy to find nesting doll penguins because she liked playing with the owl nesting dolls my mom had given me a few days before.  Abbi never complained about the walking or anything else really.  She was so pleasant and polite!  That's her usual Abbi-ness but I really appreciated it on a six-day vacation without Jake.

Noah loved everything but said the carousel with Grandpa was his favorite.  The day we left he had cold and croup symptoms but he was still active and happy the whole time.  It was really fun listening to him sing little preschool songs and tell me funny things.  He loved the pirate store we walked into after the ride and spent his money there.  Sword, gun, coloring stuff...he's set for a long time.  At the aquarium he wouldn't touch the sharks or sting rays after he was so excited to see them.  Remember those little handheld water ring toss games from the 80's.  He picked a $3 one for a souvenir and I was very supportive.  I got a little testy with him by the end but I guess that's not different from a usual day together :)  He's a good baby.
